Tips from the owner
Relax in Germanys cherry region!
Hundelshausen with its 1,300 inhabitants near to the cherry town Witzenhausen lies in the low mountain range of the natural preserve Meissner-Forest of Kaufungen. The area around Germanys smallest university town is also the biggest growing area for cherries in Germany.
Hundelshausen itself lies within the Gelster Valley named after the creek Gelster and is surrounded by the mountains Langenberg, Rosenbusch, Roggenberg, and Gottesberg.
The Apartment:
The apartment is in the second floor of a spacious house and consists of a bathroom (with shower, washing machine and laundry dryer), a kitchen (oven, cooker, eating table, dishes), a sleeping rooms (double bed, cupboard, cot, diaper changing table, and balcony), one single-sleeping room (with cupboard, storage rack, a small seating area) and a huge living room (with TV, Hi-fi unit, two seating areas, a huge balcony with an amazing view over the valley and barbecue possibility).
Furthermore you have enough space to park your car, access to the connected fruit tree plantation and to the gardens in the front (with pond) and back.
Hundelshausen:
100 meters from the apartment you have the possibility to do Kneipps wading at an open wading place and 20 minutes footpath away youll find the idyllically situated Grüner See (Green Lake). The lake has two beaches at one site, a children swimming area, springboards, changing rooms, toilets, a car park, a huge sunbathing area surrounded by trees, and a kiosk and on top entry is for free!
Hundelshausen has a neo-Gothic church, a small supermarket, 2 bakeries, 2 butchers shops, a beverage market, pub and tavern, a children playground, football pitch, elementary school, kindergarten, general practitioner, hair dresser, flower shop and three working farms.
You also find loads of possibilities of doing sports several hiking trails and a mountain biking trail in the forest exist with sightseeing points like the medieval court of justice near to the manor Rückerrode in the forest of Hundelhausen.
Furthermore Hundelshausen has access to public transportation with five bus stops (mainly day-running service).
Events:
Every second weekend in September Hundelshausen celebrates a kermis and in July while the cherry trees are in full flower a Cherry-Blossom-Sprint is taking place.
In the neighbourhood: Witzenhausen Cherry town!
Witzenhausen is located 6km away from Hundelshausen. There youll find several banks, a post and hospital, shops and supermarkets, restaurants, bars and taverns, two swimming pools, a train station (with trains to Kassel and Göttingen), canoe rental service, gyms (with climbing walls), tennis and squash centre, glider airport and 2 riding stables.
But the picturesque town of Witzenhausen has more to offer than that cultural events, fairs and weekly farmer markets are taking place the whole year surrounded by precious half-timbered houses from eight centuries.
A university for ecological/subtropical agriculture and environment protection and an ethnological museum with more than 1200 exhibits from Africa, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia, and Polynesia and from Central- and Southamerica are located in the town centre.
A special experience is also the best preserved medieval castle Burg Ludwigstein and its counterpart the gigantic castle ruin Burg Hanstein in Thuringia (just behind the former border of the GDR)
Southward from Hundelshausen is the former volcano Meissner, the biggest elevation of northern Hesse (754m above seal level). Grimms fairy tale Mother Holle is originated at this bewitched place and a wildlife park invites its guests to watch and pet deer, goats, ostriches, rabbits and much more animals! One daytrip could also be the Castle of Sleeping Beauty near Hofgeismar
Other visit points could be the health resort Bad-Sooden-Allendorf - once it became very rich due to its salt resources beautiful half-timbered houses, cosy taverns and restaurants are located in town. A saline and spa bath Werrataltherme also invite for a rest.
The next big cities are the famous University City Göttingen (30 min by car and 25 min by train) which accommodated illustrious people like Goethe, Brother Grimm, Otto Hahn and Max Planck! Its succinct hanseatic architecture style is famous throughout Germany.
Art and Culture in Kassel:
The Documenta exhibitor Kassel is another near located big city and has much to offer. Museums with Dutch (Rembrand) and Italian art, Theatres, an innovative art scene, Europes largest hillside park (early 18th century) with castles, Hercules statue, lakes and water fountains. Every five years the documenta puts on an exhibition of contemporary trends in modern art as well as providing a forum for new exhibition concepts. During the documenta 11 the documenta exhibition halls also played a central role. 650,000 visitors came to view and reflect on exhibits dealing predominantly with media art and installations with political themes. The next documenta exhibition, documenta 13, will take place between June 9th and September 16th 2012!
The brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were outstanding figures whose work had a lasting effect on artistic developments in Germany and Europe. Their fairytale collection became famous worldwide. A large part of their lives was spent in Kassel and there is much evidence of their lives and work along the “German Fairy Tale Route”.
Virtually every art lover has heard of the collection of old masters in the Wilhelmshöhe Palace Art Gallery. The main part of this unique collection is devoted to Dutch and Flemish painters, including many world-famous pictures by Rembrandt.
